Frequent Urination during Pregnancy
Frequent urination is one of the most common pregnancy symptoms that women experience. In fact some women will experience frequent urination and they may not even know they are pregnant yet. There are a couple of reasons for frequent urination during pregnancy.
Frequent urination happens during early pregnancy, as soon as 6-7 weeks, because of the increased blood flow while pregnant. The extra blood leads to extra fluid being processed through the kidneys and into the bladder. The more fluid that accumulates in your bladder, the more you have to void.
Later in pregnancy, frequent urination is caused by the weight and pressure that your expanding uterus puts on your bladder. When a woman becomes pregnant and her uterus starts growing bigger and getting heavier, it puts pressure on the bladder, causing the woman to not be able to hold as much fluid in the bladder. This results in the woman having to void more often. During the third trimester especially is when the extra trips to the bathroom become more frequent. Some of the time, the way the baby is lying in the uterus has the most effect on how often a woman has to go to the bathroom. During the last couple of weeks of pregnancy, a baby's head may have dropped and may constantly be putting pressure on the woman's bladder, making the bathroom a woman's best friend for those few weeks.
Also, pregnant women are advised to drink more water for the health of their baby and themselves. Drinking more fluids throughout the day also leads to more frequent urination. Do not be tempted to cut back on your water and fluid intake, as this may lead to dehydration which can be really serious to you and your baby.
Don't be tempted to hold in your voids for a long period of time. This may lead to bladder and urinary tract infections which are not good for pregnant woman. Urination helps to get rid of the toxins in the body and when you hold urine in, the toxins are held in the bladder and the urinary tract for a longer period of time, making the chances of infection to increase. If at any time it burns when you pee or you have lower back pain when you pee, then this may be an indication of a bladder infection. See your doctor right away to properly take care of it.
